Hey there! My name is John and I’m currently a third year studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at UC Berkeley.

My true passion in life is to create products to help and bring joy to the people around me as well as the world at large. That desire has taken me on a wild journey — from fully bent on becoming a mechanical engineer to wanting to conduct technical AI safety research — but has been such a rewarding one. Outside of my work, I love to serve at my local church ✝️, eat great food across the Bay 🍱, and play all sorts of sports 🏐!

    Summer 2023

    ● Built state-of-the-art NLP models with small footprint (1500 lines) and minimal overhead training costs

    ● Conducted and implemented theoretical research on building foundation models with Joint Embedding Predictive Architectures (JEPAs) through PyTorch, Transformers, and GPU-based training

    ● Analyzed, reported on, and implemented cutting edge LLM methods, such as Multi-Query Attention, Rotary Embeddings, and Byte-Tokenizers

  2. Cisco - Software Engineering Intern, IoT Engineering Team

    Summer 2022

    ● Built an end-to-end router application production feature in C that automatically collects relevant log information based on cell signal, GPS fix, and other router vitals

    ● Ensured seamless integration with hundreds of other pre-existing router features and routines, leading to production code integration and client-facing release

    ● Incorporated customer use cases into intelligent auto-triggers for context-based logging

  3. SPAR - AI Researcher at FAR AI

    Spring 2023

    ● Researched under FAR AI’s project ‘Using Natural Language Instructions to Safely Steer RL Agents’

    ● Utilized OpenAI Gym to create custom RL environments (fixed horizon and resettable MDPs) for CLIP model testing

  4. UC Berkeley EECS - Tutor for Designing Information Devices and Systems II

    Spring 2023

    ● Taught content in advanced linear algebra (SVD, PCA, Control) and circuitry (Phasors, Complex Power, Transfer Functions) to over 500+ students

    ● Prepared and facilitated weekly office hours to bolster student comprehension, including reviewing and grading student coursework

  5. Design Visionaries - Product Design Intern

    2020 - 2021

    ● Led the design of scalable respirator systems for COVID-19 workers to meet OSHA and FDA guidelines

    ● Revised the Design Visionaries Unigraphics textbook for updated firmware, published with the 2019 edition

    ● Helped train and onboard Meta (Oculus) and Snap employees in NX 12 for the design of wearables

  6. Project Exo-Walk - Applied Research Project

    2018 - 2021

    ● Researched and designed an EMG-responsive robotic skeleton for stroke rehabilitation, specifically for bipedal motion (walking, sitting, etc.)

    ● Combined knowledge of Arduino, C++, NX, and human anatomy to improve its functionality and design
